The Big Lebowski and it's main character, The Dude, have become synonymous with the White Russian or the Caucasian. The drink made it into the mainstream in the late 60's, had a brief time in the sun in the 70's and has been revived since the early 2000's. The Big Lebowski certainly played a big part in it's revival.
It's an easy, make-shift, free-pour, build-in-the-glass drink that's sweet and smooth. If you are heavy on the White and take it easy on the Russian, you won't be able to taste the bite of the alcohol. It's heavy, but one of the easiest cocktails to drink if you're not used to cocktails. You don't need to measure it out, shake it and double-strain it, but if you do, you'll like it better.
Vodka is the classic base spirit, from which it get's it's name. If you're looking for a different flavor profile, you can use Gin (White Britain, maybe) or Genever (White Dutchman, perhaps). For the Vodka I like using Moskovkaya. It has the best Soviet-era label and appears so perfectly utilitarian. The vodka you use, isn't as important as the coffee liqueur. Kahlúa is the most ubiquitous, but I find it to be too sweet which drowns out the coffee flavor. There are plenty of coffee liqueurs to choose from, but if you can get your hands on the St. George NOLA Coffee Liqueur, you'll be happy you did, even if you've never liked coffee liqueurs, this one will probably bring you around.
Heavy cream is the original ingredient, but there are all sorts of things that are subbed in for the cream, from milk to half & half to powdered non-dairy creamer to chocolate milk (which would spoil the name White Russian and Caucasian), but heavy coconut milk is the best option I've found. Plus, it's the vegan version of the drink. No need to leave them out in the cold.
This is a dessert cocktail. It's kinda like a milkshake. It's meant to be sipped slowly. Since we shake this one and it's been chilled and diluted, I like using a large cube of ice. It will keep the drink cold without diluting it too much. The Dude would abide, but that's just, like, my opinion, man.
Recipe:
1.5oz Vodka
1oz Coffee Liqueur
1.5oz Coconut Milk (or Cream)
