Halloween Cocktail. Curled or Straight? How to make the Satan's Whiskers cocktail with Gin, Dry Vermouth, Sweet Vermouth, Orange Liqueur, Orange Bitters & Orange Juice is up to you. I tend to make it with Cointreau, which is in neither category. Typically, it's made with either Grand Marnier or Orange Curaçao.
This drink, like the Income Tax Cocktail (
http://youtu.be/JBGJCg_V8uo), is an offspring of the Bronx Cocktail. It's a good one to start with if you're a person who's still apprehensive about gin. It has a recognizable flavor profile and is not too harsh, despite being almost 3/4 alcohol. This drink is typically made with equal parts across the board, but this recipe, I find to be the most balanced.
It's important to use fresh Orange Juice to help achieve this balance. As always, it's dealer's choice on the gin, but the St. George Dry Rye Gin has a deep malty profile that works really well with this drink. Dolin has become my favorite, go-to for vermouths. The notable absence of Grand Marnier or Orange Curaçao is simply because I rarely have those orange liqueurs in stock. Cointreau is the most diverse orange liqueur and the one I typically have on hand. If you're a purist or love a Satan's Whiskers in the curled or straight variety, by all means, go for it. Regan's Orange Bitters were one of the first to reintroduce orange bitters to the market. Orange Bitters had been absent for quite a while. Without Orange Bitters you wouldn't be able to make this drink or a proper Martini or a Pegu Club Cocktail or a Rob Roy or many others. Luckily there are a lot of brands out there now currently producing Orange Bitters so you can get up to the devil's business the right way. Cheers!

1 oz Gin
0.5 oz Dry Vermouth
0.5 oz Sweet Vermouth
0.5 oz Orange Liqueur (typically Grand Marnier or Orange Curaçao)
1 oz Orange Juice
dash Orange Bitters
Shake with Ice
Strain into chilled Coupe Glass
Garnish with Orange Twist
