Remember the Alimony is a modern reimagining of the classic cocktail, the Negroni. It's made with Fino Sherry, Cynar, Gin and a Orange Twist for garnish. This low-ABV cocktail was created in 2012 by Dan Greenbaum, a sherry expert and New York-area bartender.
The drink appeared on the menu for The Beagle, a bar Greenbaum co-owned. It was one of several divorce-themed drinks on the menu, such as, Second Marriage and Haitian Divorce. The drink’s name was a pun and sort of a cockney rhyming slang for Negroni. "I'll have a Remember...Remember the Alimony...Negroni."
This drink retooled a Negroni for sherry, so the sweet vermouth was swapped out for sherry and the Campari was swapped out for Cynar. The gin remained, but in order to get it to work, Greenbaum had to play around with the measurements. He lowered the gin and beefed up both the sherry and cynar.
The drink is designed to be made with Fino Sherry, in particular. Other dry Sherries will work, but Fino will produce the best results.
There are two versions of Cynar, the 33-proof original with the red label and the 70-proof version in the black label. This drink is designed with the original Cynar in mind.
Greenbaum recommends using a London Dry Gin, in particular, Beefeater. I definitely like it that way, but the drink is especially interesting with a new wave gin like Copper & Kings (made from apples) or Astral Pacific (made from clementines). The fruitiness of the base gives the drink that extra bit of character that I really love.
I came across this drink in Robert Simonson’s book, 3-Ingredient Cocktails and I saw it on the menu at Raines Law Room in NYC. Now, it’s become one of my off-menu go-to’s when I’m at a bar with a good cocktail program and it’s slow enough to order an off-menu drink. It had the added bonus of being a drink that the bartender gets excited about as well, which is never a bad thing.
It was not intentionally designed as a low-ABV drink, it just worked out that way. It’s a great drink to warm up your engine and, of course, it’s a wonderful alternative option for Negroni Week…or Shark Week or any other week. Cheers!
