This is an original drink inspired by Game of Thrones that uses Singani, White Vermouth, Orange Liqueur (Cointreau) and Mezcal. This liquid offering is named after the team of assassins called Faceless Men, who worship the Many-Faced God (aka the God of Death).
Aesthetically, the drink is hidden in plain sight and cannot be visually identified, much like the drink's namesake. It blends into its surroundings. The clear liquid doesn't give away what's in the glass. But the cocktail is complex, yet balanced, fruity, yet smokey and a smooth sipper.
It's important that all the components be clear. The Singani and White Vermouth should be no problem, but the Orange Liqueur and Mezcal sometimes come in other colors. For the Orange Liqueur, Cointreau is ideal, but if you have Combier or Luxardo Triplum or another clear Orange Liqueur, that will work.
Make sure to use a Mezcal with a real solid, smokey profile. The aromatics are really what you're after. Del Maguey Vida is my go-to Mezcal. It's affordable and has a big, bold, funky flavor profile that's not afraid of smoke. There are some Mezcals that are aged or otherwise colored that won't work for this drink. There are also Mezcals that have very little smoke or are sin humo (without smoke) and those, too, do not belong in this one.
White Vermouth is not the same as Dry Vermouth. White Vermouth, sometimes called Blanc Vermouth or Bianco Vermouth, is a semi-sweet vermouth that's clear in color and sweeter than Dry Vermouth, but drier than Sweet Vermouth. It's also the most misunderstood and key ingredient in the El Presidente ( https://youtu.be/Xp5P5HetqA0). And it really compliments the base spirit, Singani.
Singani was one of Bolivia's best kept secrets for centuries. It has a very distinct flavor. It's extremely floral (lilac) and fruity (plums, papaya) and citrusy (bergamot) and funky (white pepper and potpourri) with a touch of honey. This spirit is nearly impossible to sub out, especially in this drink. Luckily for everyone outside of Bolivia, Singani is making its way to the rest of the world. This is thanks, in large part, to the efforts of Steven Soderbergh, who is the man behind Singani 63. There are a couple other brands making their way to the states, Rujero being a good example, all of them will work in this drink.
Because it's so smooth, light and complex, The Faceless Man is a great companion to Game of Thrones. Be sure to mix one up before you sit down to watch the show...or curl up with the book. Cheers!
