This Dutch inspired cocktail with Genever (Holland Gin), Orange Liqueur, Orange Bitters, Orange Juice and Maraschino Cherries (
http://youtu.be/FXLI4XvFlPo), comes from the 1948 Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide.
Genever and three different types of Orange flavors seem like a difficult combination to pull off successfully, but the Amsterdam Cocktail nails it. The original recipe calls for 4 dashes, but I like it with 6. Feel free to dial it back according to your preference. The Maraschino Cherry garnish, too, was not called for in the original recipe, but I find it helps add something exciting and unexpected to the drink.
If you're a purist, you'll want to stick to the 4 dashes and no garnish. Try it both ways and let me know which one you like the best. Enjoy!
Recipe:
1 oz Genever
0.5 oz Orange Liqueur
0.5 oz Orange Juice
6 dashes Orange Bitters
garnish Maraschino Cherry
Shake with Ice
Double strain into chilled Coupe Glass
Garnish with Maraschino Cherry
